Hello to everyone! I recently accepted a job offer in Hanoi and I'm quite excited about it. However, I recently found out while doing internet research that foreigner/expat salaries are subjected to Vn income taxes? Is this true? I have worked offshore before and I know for a fact that salaries obtained from working offshore are tax-exempt. I just need some enlightenment...I hope to get some answers here from other expats. Thanks very much and I will appreciate any response from anyone about this matter very much!
Have a good day!
Corinne

Yes Corinne, you pay tax here no matter who you are, unless you got paid under the table. Offshore tax exemption applies for foreign companies of selected countries.

Of interest to many expats is whether they are obligated to pay Vietnam income taxes on income they earn from OUTSIDE Vietnam, ie: pensions from their home country, or business income from their home country.

Why would you have to pay taxes on you US income.. That should have nothing to do with Vietnam..

The U.S. taxes its citizens on their worldwide income. Some countries only tax income earned from within their country. Some do a bit of both.

I am pretty sure tat you will have to pay taxes on all income unless you were working "under the tanle".

Everybody pays tax that why I'm puzzled why do governments still have budget deficits. Even when you are conceived, you're already taxed. every earning that you make, you are taxed. Everything that you buy is also taxed so even if you work illegally or under the tanle just like April said, Here's you request Jacob, hop you like it. This site has links articles with the tax subject with it.

I think everyone is not exempted from paying tax except for a few Members of Parliament in some countries who twiat the law in their favor. Being an expat in another country should not make you nay different from a resident. Even if you work in what I would call 'under the table terms', you will still pay Value Added Tax in foodstuff and everything else. Here is a link you might find helpful

It is indeed healthy, though unwelcome that the US taxes their citizens the world over on the income they make. It is indeed a way of making people invest into their native economies. What I fail to understand is how the tax payers in the diaspora benefit from the government. It would be a good idea to find out the tax requirements while in Vietnam. That is the best way to find first hand information.
